Wood-fired Giant Octopus Vase
This wood fired Giant Octopus Vase was fired for a total of 6 days and reached temperatures higher than 2350 degrees. It takes an entire team of people working around the clock in shifts to continually feed the flames. At times it actually breathes like dragon spitting and retracting flames from the mouth. One of the main desired outcomes from these types of wood-firings is the liquidation of ash in the kiln. The effect is a beautiful drip pattern that is completely random and unpredictable.
The kiln is called an Anagama and is big enough to host a dinner party inside. (See Picture)
This piece is quite large and measures 26"tall x about 15" diameter.
